Obituary for Silas Andrew Payne Sr.


Silas Andrew Payne, Sr., age 96, of Chatham, entered into rest on October 26, 2017 at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on November 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Frank Payne and the late Mary Kate Stegall Payne. He was married to the late Erma Lee Burnett Payne.

He was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church. He retired from VDOT and loved gardening and bird watching.

He is survived by one son, Silas Andrew (Christine) Payne, Jr. of Gretna; four grandchildren, Todd Payne of Chatham, Brian Payne of Northern Virginia, Stacie (Scott) Tyree of Lynchburg, and Joshua (Penny) Payne of Callands; seven great-grandchildren, Drew, Blair, Colby, Chase (Tabitha), Luke, Jonathan, and Abigail; one great-great-grandchild, Ava; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Nuckols Payne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Harry Burnett Payne, brothers, James Payne, Paul Payne, and Franklin Payne, and one sister, Elizabeth Wood.

Graveside services will be conducted at Hillcrest Burial Park on Monday October 30, 2017 at 11:00 am with Rev. Curtis English officiating.

The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home on Saturday October 28, 2017 from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm and at other times will be at the residence of Bonnie Payne, 2100 Triangle School Rd. Callands, VA.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
